Dear Language Enthusiast,

Greetings from Transparent Language! Every so often we send out this free newsletter with topics of interest to Latin language enthusiasts. This month we're offering something special: a contest. Read on to find out how you may have a chance to win a free copy of our upcoming humorous Latin title, "A Trip To Pompeii."

Here in New Hampshire the snow has finally melted and spring seems to be upon us. As warm weather approaches, traveling has been on our minds, and so we have chosen travel tips as the topic for this newsletter. Time travel, that is. And the focus is on destinations to AVOID: the "hot spots" of the ancient world.

Sincerely,
Transparent Language

latine:

"Nubes-- incertum procul intuentibus ex quo monte (Vesuvium fuisse postea cognitum est)-- oriebatur, cuius similitudinem et formam non alia magis arbor quam pinus expresserit. Nam longissimo velut trunco elata in altum quibusdam ramis diffundebatur, credo quia recenti spiritu evecta, dein senescente eo destituta aut etiam pondere suo victa in latitudinem vanescebat, candida interdum, interdum sordida et maculosa prout terram cineremve sustulerat."
In English:

"A cloud was issuing forth from a mountain: which mountain it was hard for an onlooker to say at such a distance, although it later became evident that it was Mt. Vesuvius. It had a shape that may best be likened to a pine tree, for it reached up into the heights with an enormously long trunk and then spread out into differentiated branches. This was likely to have been the result of having been ejected by a momentary blast of air and then left hanging as that blast petered out, so that the cloud collapsed of its own weight into a flattened mass which shone with a clean white color in some places and was dirty and spotted in others (owing to the quantity of ash or dirt it contained)."
